The Way We Speak To Ourselves Is Everything

The article, 22 Facts About the Brain from the Dent Neurologic Institute states, “The average person has about 12,000 to 60,000 thoughts per day. Of those, 95% are exactly the same repetitive thoughts as the day before and about 80% are negative.”

Wow, that’s a lot of thoughts in a day. I could see it, though, because I think a lot of thoughts. I agree with the idea that we often think repetitive thoughts, and many of them are negative.

It made me think about how I speak to myself internally, the stuff I think about that I don’t say out loud. Once I became aware of that, I heard a lot of negativity. Sad. It’s not surprising, though.

Being Aware Brings About Change

So, guess what? When we’re aware of something, that’s when change takes place.

And change is hard. It is. But it’s so worth it to go through it to come out the other side.  It’s the metamorphosis of a butterfly, like I wrote in my blog post, Calling All Butterflies.

Thoughts Can Help or Hinder Us

Thinking positively about ourselves can help us go through life with a great attitude. That great attitude will help us overcome anything that life may toss our way. Our thoughts can help us bounce back quicker from setbacks and negativity.

Thinking better thoughts about ourselves helps us easily move past something that hurt, such as harmful words or the inconsiderate actions of others. We can’t control others, but we can control how we deal with others.

Since the goal of life is to live a good one, why not think better thoughts all the time? We’re the ones in our heads, not the people who hurt us.

Thinking Better

  • Pay close attention to thoughts. Anything that seems negative must be challenged.
  • If feeling sad, depressed, or anxious, ask yourself why you feel this way. By questioning ourselves, we can stop the thoughts that lead to feelings of sadness, depression, or anxiety from getting out of control and taking over our lives.
  • Once we’re aware of our thoughts, we can diffuse the heavy ones by 1) acknowledging they exist, 2) processing the emotion attached to them by dealing with it 3) then letting them go.

Calm Down Racing Thoughts

  1. Slowly inhale for four seconds. Hold it for four seconds and then breathe out for four seconds. A stranger shared that with me years ago. The woman was a transport person at a hospital. She said her husband did it and called it “four-square breathing.” I found a video on it,  called Box Breathing for Stress.
  2. Once you have regulated your breathing, think positive thoughts – whatever makes you feel good. Focus on only thinking thoughts that uplift you and enrich your life.
  3. Implant new beliefs of how you want your life to go. Believe them! Do what you need to do to believe them. Write them down. Repeat them in your mind or say them out loud to your reflection in a mirror.

We can all have a good life. It all starts in our minds.  Everything we feel, perceive, believe, and react to comes first from our thoughts. Since that is true, why is it so far-fetched to think we all can have a good life? That’s negative thinking. We want to think positively.

Get Control of Your Thoughts

Rein in those jumbled thoughts, take control of them, just like you would a horse you want to ride. If you ride a horse that’s out of control, you’re going to be anxious, scared, and feel like your life is out of your hands. Keep that in mind with your thoughts.

Good Thoughts = Good Things

Think better thoughts. I know this time we’re living in can present as chaotic, but only if we allow it to be. The more of us who are in control of our thoughts and think more rationally and calmly, the more our world will reflect peace and happiness. It’s not a wishful dream; it can be real. A ripple in a body of water spreads out with one movement.
