Get What You Want – Seriously

If you’re like me, striving to have more, do more, be more, then this post is for you (and me!). Until I believed I deserved more, I was stuck. We can all feel this way from time to time when things don’t seem to be working out as we want. What I’ve learned is that it’s not enough to want something; you have to define it, trust that you are meant for it, and work toward it.

I’ve been praying this, “Please guide me, and show me what I’m supposed to do, I’ll do the work.” I trust a higher power is listening. Out of all the books I have, I chose to read Goals! How to Get Everything You Want – Faster than You Ever Thought Possible, from my large book collection on self-improvement. Here’s a link to it. When I went to the Amazon website to copy the address, it showed I purchased it on May 3, 2007. Today is May 3, 2025, as I write this. I’ve had it eighteen years and never read it.

Once I started reading it, I was flabbergasted! Yes, flabbergasted! Talk about learning good stuff to level up (like I wrote about in my last blog post, Level Up). It made me want to share this valuable knowledge to get what we want.

The author, Brian Tracy, is a top management consultant, trainer, and speaker who has written over 35 books and more than 300 audio and video learning programs. I’ve watched his YouTube videos and listened to a few of his audio learning programs, but reading this book now, as the person I am today, it’s making a lot of sense to help get what I want.

Brian first points out that we need to unlock our potential. He writes, “It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from; all that matters is where you’re going. And where you’re going is solely determined by yourself and your own thoughts. If your goal is to create a wonderful life full of health, happiness, and prosperity, you will achieve that as well.”

In the same chapter, Brian Tracy asks, “What are your goals? What purpose are you aiming at? Where do you want to end up at the end of the day?”

Have you asked yourself those questions? I thought I had done it before in multiple goal tablets and binders I’ve had throughout the years. (As you may have surmised, I love to be organized and thoughtful about all my paper stuff. It makes more sense to be able to access the information quickly. I can’t stand clutter!)  However, I wasn’t implementing the goals I had written. I wrote too much and it was overwhelming! It’s as if I set myself up for failure before I started.

To help myself get better at writing and achieving goals, I watched YouTube videos with coaches, motivational speakers, and paper planners. I read countless articles online about it. I followed the steps to write out goals and learned the rules of SMART goal writing the HSI website:

S   Specific – answers the who, what, where and when of the goal.

M Measurable – creating milestones within your SMART goal to track progress.

A  Attainable – Determine if the goal is realistic or just a dream.

R  Relevant – consider whether this is worth your time and relevant to your life.

T  Time-Bound – it must have a timeline and a deadline.

Still, I wasn’t taking the action necessary to attain my goals. Oh, I’ve been busy, just not on the right stuff. Gosh, it has been frustrating! Reading this book has been enlightening, and I believe I have learned how to attain my goals. Now it’s up to me to be disciplined and stick to the plan.

Brian Tracy sums up what we have to do (and think) to set the foundation for achieving all our milestones.

  1. Develop a burning desire for your goals. A must.
  2. You must know exactly what you want.
  3. Determine the price you will have to pay to achieve it and then get busy paying that price.

Write down what you want. Seeing it on paper makes it real to you, not just a wish or dream floating around in your head. Then take the steps, baby steps are fine, toward living the life you choose, that you want. Once you have it down on paper – in detail – figure out what you have to do to get it.

For example, if a goal is to start a business, first, write down in detail what kind of business you want.  Say it’s a gym. What do you need to do to begin?

  1. If you know nothing about starting a gym, go to the library and read up on it or watch YouTube videos on opening a gym, I’m sure there’s one out there. Learn from others who have already done it.
  2. Figure out the finances. How much do you have to invest in it? How much would it cost to have the business (rent, equipment, insurance, employees, etc.)?  How much money would you need to start it? You need to know these things upfront. Keep notes.
  3. Scout for a location.
  4. Research machines and equipment for information, prices, and reviews.
  5. Once you are a go with the financial stuff, sign the lease, buy the products you need, and create a marketing plan for getting people to come to your gym so you make money. Spread the news of your business opening everywhere you can think of. Hire a marketing company if you want someone else to take care of it, and you have the funds.
  6. Be nice. People like nice people. You want success? Share your passion with others, respect your customers, all while earning a living doing what you love to do.

I know nothing about opening a gym, I just thought of that example to show you how to create an action plan for attaining your goal (s).

Believe me, I understand how much courage it takes to go after what you want. It’s not for chumps, that’s for sure. We have to be vigilant with our thoughts and not let any bit of doubt enter our minds. Positive thinking must be your default. Work on it. Once you build up your positive thinking muscle, there is nothing or no one who can stop you from getting what you want.

This is not wishy-washy mumbo jumbo. What we think about, we get. You want more, think better thoughts. Stop limiting yourself with negative thinking. It’s a habit, and habits can be changed. I work every day on changing habits that don’t serve me. It’s not difficult to do. Having awareness of our thoughts is the most challenging part. Catch yourself if you think a negative thought and stop it. Replace it with something positive and easy to remember. Keep thinking that over and over. My default thinking has changed. I changed the habit. You can change the habit.

You deserve to get what will make you happy. Remember that what you want is what’s in your mind, not to please someone else. We are enough. Who we are is enough. We don’t need to explain ourselves to anyone or feel less than because we aren’t living the life we want, yet. The journey is living, not the result.

Thank you for reading this, and I send good vibes and positivity your way.

To getting what we want,

Francesca
